Witsand is also known as the Whale Nursery of South Africa and boasts the large Breede River estuary, famous for kite-surfing and fishing. Our house is located in a quiet street within walking distance of the Breede estuary and is a pleasant walk of less than 2km from Witsand's famous Blue Flag beach. The double-storey house comes with a large walled-in outside space and BBQ for those balmy summer evenings.

Downstairs, there are 2 twin bedrooms and a family bathroom.

Upstairs, there is a spacious open-plan living room, dining room, and kitchen, which connects to a balcony with sea and estuary views. The kitchen is equipped with an oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle, and basic kitchen utensils. It also has an additional gas-plated stove for when Eskom is acting up.

Also on this floor is a large main bedroom with a double bed and a room with two single beds. There's a lovely bathroom with a shower and bath. The main bedroom has its very own balcony with gorgeous farmland and distant mountain views. The top floor was newly renovated in 2018.

Activities in Witsand:

Whale Watching

  • Southern Right Whales, nursing their young, is a big feature of San Sebastian Bay. The best time to come for whale spotting is between June and October, when the region is also at its most beautiful.

Fishing

  • Witsand is recognised as one of South Africa's top fishing destinations
  • The Breede River Mouth is famous for its giant Kabeljou (Cob). Tidal action reaches 40km upstream supporting a rich diversity of fish and birdlife.
  • Rock & Shore Angling is also good at Witsand and you're likely to catch a Cob, Steenbras, Grunter, Elf, Leervis or Belman.
  • Deep Sea Fishing Charters can be organised where you can try your hand at Shark, Geelbek (Cape Salmon), White and Red Stumpnose, Red Roman or Cob

Water Sports

  • The estuary offers a fantastic spot for kite surfing. Bring your own equipment or hire in Cape Town.
  • Wind surfing, sailing, snorkeling, water skiing and a wonderful swimming beach should keep the adventurous occupied. No jet skis. No vehicles on beach.

Bird Watching

  • The Overberg region contains great numbers of Herons, Egrets, Waders, Ducks and Teals. In summer you can see Ospreys, Lesser Kestrel and Steppe Buzzards. Fish Eagles, Oyster Catchers and Kingfishers are often seen. It isn't unusual to come across flocks of several hundred Blue Cranes in the area around the Breede River. Not to mention that Witsand is Ostrich country!

Relaxing peace and quiet

  • Witsand is far away from the maddening crowd. You can wander along the beach for hours and be perfectly safe. Crime is almost non-existent.
  • The area offers beautiful scenery, especially in winter and spring when everything is green and bright yellow Canola decorates the countryside. But summer brings its own charm as the waters warm up and swimming becomes a great attraction.
  • There is a network of hiking trails throughout the town and various longer hiking and 4x4 trails in the area
  • Drive out to the quaint, historic towns of Stilbaai, Waenhuiskrans, Malgas, Heidelberg, Vermaaklikheid and De Hoop Nature and Marine Reserve - all just around the corner.

Witsand has become a landmark for anglers and travelers alike, and we are looking forward to welcoming you here soon!
